For well over 600 years, a costume football match has been played in Florence on the 24th of June. The game is played in honour of the city's patron saint, St John the Baptist, although the original aim of the tournament was to keep the city's military forces in shape. The match is usually held at the well known Piazza della Signoria, which is covered in sand for the occasion. Four teams of 27 players from different city districts all dress in ornate medieval costume. During the match anything goes, as players attempt to put the ball in the opponent's net within 50 minutes.
