Alfama is one of Lisbon's oldest and most authentic districts and a must-see during your visit to the city. A labyrinth of narrow lanes transports you back to the Lisbon of long ago. Washing hangs outside to dry wherever you look, and colourful pots of flowers stand in front of doors and on windowsills. Around midday you'll catch the tantalizing smell of freshly fried fish and garlic and in the evening you can visit one of the numerous little cafes to listen to the fado music. Tip: If you don't feel like walking, take tram number 28. It passes directly through this historic district!
