Het Smithsonian Institution is ’s werelds grootste Amerikaanse onderwijs- en onderzoeksinstituut met een bijbehorend museumcomplex. Het werd opgericht in 1846 en bestaat tegenwoordig uit negentien musea en galerie\u00ebn, het National Zoological Park en negen onderzoeksfaciliteiten. Het grootste deel van de musea is gevestigd in Washington D.C., met name aan de National Mall. In totaal bezit het Smithsonian Institution maar liefst 142 miljoen voorwerpen die elk een stukje geschiedenis vertellen over Amerika. Het instituut en de musea worden gefinancierd en indirect beheerd door de Amerikaanse overheid.<\/p>\n

\tHet doel van dit instituut is de toename en verspreiding van kennis te verhogen, de toekomst van het behoud van het erfgoed vorm te geven, nieuwe kennis te ontdekken en de middelen die op deze wereld zijn te delen.<\/p>\n

\tAlle musea die onder het Smithsonian Institution vallen zijn iedere dag te bezoeken, behalve op 25 december. Je hoeft daarbij geen entreekosten te betalen.
