De hoofdstad van het district Commewijne vlakbij Paramaribo is Nieuw-Amsterdam. Anders dan in ons eigen landje is Nieuw-Amsterdam echt een dorp. Het ligt aan de samenvloeiing van de Surinamerivier en de rivier Commewijne. Nieuw-Amsterdam telt 1200 inwoners, met name Javanen en Hindoestanen. Aan de kustlijn zijn nog altijd grote kanonnen uit de Tweede Wereldoorlog te zien, opgesteld ter bescherming van de ingang van de rivier tegen Duitse schepen. Het openluchtmuseum in Nieuw-Amsterdam is een bekende trekpleister voor toeristen en de Nationale bevolking.
