De plantage werd in 1745 gesticht, waar voornamelijk Javanen en Hindoestanen werkten. Om de suikerriet te leveren aan verschillende plaatsen in het land werd een twaalf kilometer lange spoorweg gelegd, de eerste spoorverbinding van Suriname.
