Ruim &euro; 180 miljoen kostte het nieuwe culturele centrum van ruim 7000 vierkante meter groot. Architect Bernard Tschumi kreeg de vrije hand wat resulteerde in een stoer gebouw, voornamelijk opgetrokken uit glas en beton. Het museum heeft vijf verdiepingen waarbinnen de uit 4000 stukken bestaande collectie chronologisch is opgebouwd. Op de eerste verdieping geeft een glazen vloer je zicht op een christelijke nederzetting uit de 7de eeuw n.c.. die ontdekt werd tijdens de bouw van het museum. Tijdens een bezoek in Athene niet naar dit prachtige museum gaan, is bijna een zonde.
