Een van de beroemdste en duurste gevangenissen is het Eastern State Penitentiary. Het opende zijn duren in 1829 en dat maakt het de eerste penitentiaire inrichting van de wereld. Daarnaast was de instelling toentertijd het grootste en duurste openbare gebouw. Beruchte criminelen zoals Willie Sutton en Al Capone hebben hier vastgezeten. Sinds 1971 fungeert het gebouw als museum en zijn evenementen en kunst geïntegreerd. Rond Halloween is er een groots evenement wat absoluut niet gemist mag worden, Terror Behind the Walls.
