Na de vuurzee werd een architectuurwedstrijd gehouden om te bepalen wie de nieuwe kerk mocht bouwen. Architect Sverre Knudsens won en begon twee jaar later met de bouw. De &Aring;lesund-kirke werd in rap tempo neergezet, want het was en is een belangrijke plek voor de inwoners van de stad. Het is een massief bouwwerk, met een duidelijke mix van oud en nieuw.
