{"id":8114,"date":"2021-01-05T15:17:52","date_gmt":"2021-01-05T14:17:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.cityzapper.com\/tip\/the-watergate-ruin\/"},"modified":"2026-09-18T14:41:45","modified_gmt":"2026-09-18T12:41:45","slug":"the-watergate-ruin-southampton","status":"publish","type":"tip","link":"https:\/\/www.cityzapper.com\/nl\/southampton\/the-watergate-ruin-southampton\/","title":{"rendered":"The Watergate Ruin"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Vlakbij Westquay Shopping Centre zijn de overblijfselen van een van de belangrijkste delen van de vestingmuren van Southampton te vinden.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/strong>The Watergate Ruin diende als verdediging van de zuidkant van Southampton en bood een veilige toegang van de oude binnenstad naar Town Quay.&nbsp;Tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog heet de stad veel schade opgelopen,&nbsp;de meeste historische gebouwen zijn daarom praktisch verdwenen.&nbsp;&nbsp;Helaas is er van de Watergate ook niet veel meer over, maar wel genoeg om dit historische bouwwerk nog te bewonderen. Naast de Watergate zijn in de hele stad nog enkele sporen van de stadsmuur te zien, zoals de <a
