Vagta: the national horse race

My guide Last update 1 year ago
The national horse race is an event which lies close to the heart of Hungarian tradition. It's a cultural festival that's held in May or June of each year. People from 100 towns around Budapest come to participate in this historic event. The winner receives a prize of 30 million HUF, or around 120,000 EUR. The race dates back to the 16th century Hungarian Renaissance and a different historical hero is honoured each year. The jockeys take up their positions dressed in traditional costumes. The race is held on Heroes' Square, Hosok tere, one of Budapest's largest squares.
