The Historical Regatta takes place along the Grand Canal on the first Sunday in September. The canal is filled with beautiful 13th century craft and its banks are lined with thousands of spectators. The Regatta is headed up by a boat bearing the 'bucintoro', the symbol which commemorates the fact that the wife of the King of Cyprus ceded the throne in favour of Venice in 1489. The rest of the fleet of magnificent boats and ornately decorated gondolas follows. The race starts around five o'clock, but you need to get there in plenty of time to secure a good spot.
